Cultural heritage as a resource? Competing constructions, strategic usages and multiple adoptions during the 21st century.

Cultural heritage – in today’s diversified world, the concept of cultural heritage is used to redefine or delimit affiliations. Furthermore, it works as a resource regarding economic, social, and political interests. On a theoretical as well as an empirical basis, this interdisciplinary research project aims at a critical and deconstructive examination of the multifaceted mechanisms of constructing and adopting cultural heritage in selected social fields. 

To recognize the chances and potentials as well as risks of the visualization of the past, an analysis of the negotiation process of cultural heritage is required. This project combines historical, social and educational perspectives. This is so far a unique systematic analysis of the semantical and practical negotiations and constructions of cultural heritage, especially in terms of current, daily, and institution-specific communication and interaction in Germany.

The sub-projects make further facets of the phenomenon cultural heritage, which have not been considered so far, the subject of discussion. This includes social and educational scientific analytical perspectives, which move formations of cultural heritage more and more into the center of public interest, while keeping the communication relations low.
